Mini Splits
Ductless systems that deliver cooling and heating without the air ducts traditional central systems require. They’re efficient, quiet, and well-suited to a lot of the older homes, additions, and ADUs we see across LA.
What Is a
Mini Split?
A mini split is a ductless HVAC system made up of two main parts: an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air-handling units connected by a small refrigerant line. Each indoor unit cools or heats the room it’s installed in, no ductwork needed.

Why Choose a
Mini Split?
Mini splits make sense when ductwork would be expensive or impractical, when you only need to condition specific rooms, when you want independent control over each zone, or when energy efficiency is a priority. They’re a strong fit for older LA homes, room additions, garages, and ADUs.
Mini Split Types
Three indoor unit styles, each suited to different spaces and installation situations:
Wall Mounted
The most common mini split style. Mounted high on an interior wall, with a sleek profile and built-in air handler. Comes with a remote and often app control.
Best Use Cases: Living rooms, bedrooms, home offices, and ADUs. Ideal anywhere you want efficient cooling and heating without losing floor space or ceiling height.
Cassette
Recessed into the ceiling with only a flush grille visible from below. Distributes air in multiple directions for even temperature across the room.
Best Use Cases: Commercial spaces, conference rooms, retail floors, and homes with finished ceilings where homeowners prefer a clean, hidden look over a visible wall unit.
Slim Duct
A concealed indoor unit installed above the ceiling or inside a soffit, with short duct runs feeding discreet vents. Combines mini split efficiency with the cleaner look of central air.
Best Use Cases: Bedrooms, hallways, and finished spaces where homeowners want zoned ductless performance but prefer vents instead of visible wall units.

Multi-Zone Systems
A single outdoor unit connected to several indoor units, each controlling its own room or zone independently.
Whole Home Comfort
Multi-zone setups let you cool the living room and bedrooms separately, run only the zones you’re using, and keep everyone in the house at their preferred temperature. They’re efficient, flexible, and a popular choice for homes without existing ductwork.
Central Air
Whole-house cooling delivered through a network of ducts. Still the right answer for many LA homes, especially those already set up for it.
What Is Central Air?
A central air system uses an outdoor condenser, an indoor air handler or furnace, and a network of ducts to cool every room from a single thermostat. Air is filtered, cooled, and distributed evenly throughout the home.
When to Choose It?
Central air makes sense for larger homes, homes with existing ductwork in good condition, and homeowners who prefer a single thermostat controlling the whole house. It’s also worth considering when replacing an older central system that’s reaching the end of its life.
Types of Central Air Systems
Three indoor unit styles, each suited to different spaces and installation situations:
Split System
The most common setup. Outdoor condenser paired with an indoor air handler or furnace, connected through refrigerant lines and ducts.
Package Unit
All components housed in a single outdoor cabinet, often on the roof. Common in commercial buildings and some residential setups.
Heat Pump
Provides both heating and cooling from one system by reversing refrigerant flow. Efficient and well-suited to Southern California’s mild winters.
Mini Split vs Central Air
Two very different approaches, each right for different situations. A quick comparison to help you weigh the trade-offs:
Installation
Mini splits install faster with no ducts required. Central air needs existing ductwork or a duct installation project.
Efficiency
Mini splits typically score higher SEER ratings and avoid duct losses. Central air efficiency depends heavily on duct condition.
Zone Control
Mini splits cool individual rooms independently. Central air conditions the whole house from one thermostat.
Upfront Cost
A single-zone mini split is usually cheaper than central air. Multi-zone mini split setups can match or exceed central air costs.
Aesthetics
Central air is fully hidden behind walls and ceilings. Mini splits have visible indoor units, though cassette and slim duct styles reduce that.
Best For
Mini splits: older homes, additions, ADUs, room-specific cooling. Central air: larger homes, existing ductwork, single-thermostat preference.
